Description

Take a walk through the green, interesting and remarkable Vrhnika in the company of an experienced guide.

The tour of Vrhnika town centre lasts about two hours. We will take an easy stroll around Vrhnika and you will learn more about:

The first settlement on the territory of the present Vrhnika and archaeological findings in the broader area of Vrhnika, which show the presence and work of people in the area back in prehistoric times (the discovery of arrowheads in Sinja Gorica) and antiquity (the discovery of the oldest so far known wooden wheel in the world at Stare Gmajne)

Roman period, when Vrhnika or Nauportus (NAVIS - ship portus - port) was the crossing point and an important frontier outpost of the Roman Empire. In this area you are able to sightsee the remnants of the Roman defensive wall called Claustra Alpium Iuliarum (Roman limes or Ajdovski zid)

Medieval Vrhnika, which had several different names (Hiperlabacum, De Superior Laibaco, Oberlaybach, Ober Laybach, Vernich), until the Slovenian name under which it is known today was adopted. Valvasor writes that Vrhnika was known as a market as early as 1325 and was one of the oldest markets of the former province of Carniola, in which ‘’the Vrhnika Gentlemen’’ ruled.

The golden age of Vrhnika that the town experienced in the 17th century, thanks to the transport connection Trieste-Ljubljana-Vienna, and the great economic crisis, which was followed by the emergence of new industries (forestry, sawmills, lumber mills, dairy industry ...)

Modern Vrhnika, which officially became a town in 1955. Today the municipality, which spans 115 km2, has about 16,000 residents and the town of Vrhnika itself around 7,500.
